It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but it sent the internet into meltdown. A 30-second TV advert during X Factor on Sunday, debuting Adele’s first song in four years with nothing but a few lyrics on a black screen and the sound of her iconic voice.Deeply private Adele is still heartbroken, still pining for her one true love and, after months of delays, is finally ready to share her deepest and most personal emotions with the world.
In a haunting voice filled with emotional torment over the backing of a grand piano, the 27-year-old sings: “Hello. It’s me. I was wondering if, after all these years you’d like to meet to go over everything. They say that time’s supposed to heal you, but I ain’t done much healing.”
Mark Ronson, who has worked on the album, told The Sun yesterday: “I’ve heard the full song and it’s f***ing amazing.”
The track, which could be released as early as Friday, will inevitably spark further speculation about the state of her relationship with Simon Konecki, 41, the father of her son Angelo, who turned three yesterday. Music industry insiders revealed the ballad is being viewed as a likely sequel to her Brit Award-winning heartbreak ballad Someone Like You.
The lyrics are thought to relate to meetings she had with the former love, who she wrote much of her second album 21 about. In 2011 she told of her regret over their relationship, saying: “I don’t think I’ll ever forgive myself for not making my relationship with my ex on 21 work, because he’s the love of my life.”
