AN EXPLOSION has been heard outside the German consulate in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.
The blast was followed by gunfire according to reports on the ground.
Early reports suggest at least there is at least one fatality and 28 people have been taken to hospital.
The attack happened at around 11:30 pm local time, close to the consulate and a hotel as well as several guesthouses.
Residents of the area have said it felt as if the bomb “shook the whole city”.
It is believed the attack may have been carried out by the Taliban.
Witnesses have described hearing heavy bursts of gunfire after the explosion.
