A mother-of-12 who receives £40,000 in benefits a year admits to pulling her children out of school for holidays and even compares herself to Princess Diana. For the Channel 5 documentary, Benefits: Britain’s Most Shameless Mum, Cheryl Prudham gives cameras unprecedented access to her family and how she lives on state handouts. Not worried about what the public think of her, the 33-year-old jobless mother is seen taking her family on a holiday in term time, demanding a taxpayer-funded C-section, all while smoking throughout her latest pregnancy.
Cheryl confesses to spending nearly £20,000 a year on her children – and that’s just for birthday and Christmas presents. Half of the benefits Cheryl and her husband Rob receive is spent buying expensive gifts and toys for their children – including a petrol-fuelled quad bike for their six-year-old Leon.
During the documentary Cheryl’s son is seen riding around on the dangerous toy and crashing it in a field without wearing a helmet. Cheryl first hit the headlines when she claimed it was “easy” to get tens of thousands of pounds in benefits and has become a ‘reluctant celebrity’ – who compares herself to Princess Diana.
The “proud” mum delivers a warning at the end of the programme when she is seen returning home with Tilli-Grace after her £2,600 taxpayer funded C-section. “I really don’t care what anybody thinks or anyone says,” Cheryl stubbornly announces. “I’m proud of the Prudhams. She’s meant to be the last but never say never, we’ll have to see.”
