A suspected drink driver ploughed his pick-up truck into a crowd watching a Mardi Gras parade, injuring 28 people including children and a police officer.

Twenty-one people were taken to hospital after the crash at the Krewe of Endymion parade in New Orleans, five of them in a “guarded” condition.

The victims’ ages ranged from three or four to people in their 30s and 40s, said city emergency services director Dr Jeff Selder.

Mr Harrison said the injured police officer was undergoing tests and in “good spirits”.

One woman at the scene told The New Orleans Advocate that a truck whisked by her just feet away.

Carrie Kinsella said: “I felt a rush, it was so fast.”

Kourtney McKinnis, 20, told the Advocate that the driver of the truck seemed almost unaware of what he had just done.

A bomb blast has killed at least 7 in a busy shopping district.

The powerful blast left devastation across the shopping street in Lahore, Pakistan.

At least 7 people have been reported dead and 15 injured in the attack.

Armed police are on the scene following the explosion which destroyed cars and shattered windows of shops.

Pakistani officials have confirmed it was a bomb attack, AFP reports.

Security forces, suspecting the bomber was still alive, cordoned off the market in a residential neighbourhood, home to banks and coffee shops, and people were not being allowed to leave or enter.

A witness who works at a bank in the market said that his workplace was shaken by a “frightening” explosion.

“We left the building and saw that the motor-bikes parked outside were on fire and all the windows in the surrounding buildings were shattered,” the witness, Mohammad Khurram, said.

The incident happened at the Vélizy 2 shopping centre, just outside of the French capital.

The area around the mall is now on lockdown with cops directing traffic away.

Local reports state that security guards raised the alarm after spotting two suspicious men entering the centre.

One of them is then said to have left the pressure cooker ‘bomb’ in the mall.

It’s unclear if both of the men have been arrested or if they’re on the run.

German police said on Wednesday that they had deployed forces to a school in the town of Menden near Dortmund, where a media report said there was an armed man.

The college, which has about 2,000 students and 100 teachers, went into lockdown at around 11.15am local time, after pupils and staff were told to lock classroom doors.

The press office of the district government Arnsberg later said that the alert was a false alarm after no gunman could be found.

‘Thank you to all forces who quickly responded,’ the government agency said in a tweet announcing that it had been a false alarm.

A police spokesman told broadcaster n-tv during the ongoing operation in Menden and that no one had been injured.

People were instructed to stay inside at a nearby nursery school as well, according to local reports.

Helicopters were seen circling the area, and armed police and ambulances were on the ground.

A two-year-old boy has been found dead in a Perthshire river.

A major search, including the Police Scotland helicopter, was launched after the child was reported missing from a property close to the Bridge of Cally at 11:15am on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the area, fire service personnel removed the boy from the water and although he was treated by paramedics, he died.

The child was found in the River Ericht, close to the property in the Milton of Drimmie area where he was reported missing, at 12:35pm.

“Tragically the boy did not survive,” a statement from Police Scotland said.

“His family are being supported by officers at this time.”

John Swinney, MSP for Perthshire North, tweeted his support.

He wrote: “Heartbreaking news from the River Ericht at Bridge of Cally. My deepest sympathies to everyone involved.”

“It will be absolutely devastating for the family and the community,” added local councillor Liz Grant, Provost of Perth and Kinross.

“The River Ericht is fast, the rivers are all fast coming down through that area, particularly at this time of year,” she added.

Britain is set for the hottest February 20th in 160 years on Monday – with temperatures of 18°C forecast.

A giant plume of warm air from Jamaica has been blown 5,000 miles in the direction of the UK and is set to make the country warmer than Egypt and most of the Mediterranean.

Conditions are described as set to be “exceptional”.

It won’t have been this warm on February 20 since 1857 when Queen Victoria sat on the throne – and the invention of the car was still three decades away.

Weathermen are even predicting a rush to beaches and parks while ice cream sellers consider opening – all unthinkable for a winter’s day.

Many people will want to make the most of it – as 80mph storms and snow are forecast to follow.
