Cheating wife dumps secret baby to hide affair from husband

A CHEATING wife who became pregnant by her lover and dumped her newborn son on a doorstep walked free from court yesterday.

Minutes after abandoning the boy, Leigh-Anne Varley, 36, returned home and booked a “holiday of a lifetime” to Disney World in Florida. Varley, who has two children with her husband, hid the pregnancy from him by claiming ovarian cysts had caused the swelling.

She delivered her son alone in the bathroom of her home, using kitchen scissors to cut the umbilical cord. After placing the placenta in a carrier bag, she put it in her wheelie bin before moving the baby.

Varley went round the corner from her home in Horden, Co Durham, and left him wrapped in a dressing gown on the doorstep of a nearby flat.

Varley admitted abandoning a child contrary to section one of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933.

She was accompanied by her family, including her father-inlaw, who said his son was “very fragile” following the shock of his wife’s deceit.

However, the court heard that Varley was still “part of the family unit”.

She was spared jail and walked free with a suspended sentence. The baby is not living with Varley but is said to be doing well.

The court heard the baby was found by a dog named Zak which began barking as it was being walked just before 4.45am on May 26.

The child was lying in the doorway of a flat the dog owner shared with Janice Clish, 52.

The baby was taken to hospital as police sought to trace the mother. Varley rang police to admit the baby was hers.

Sarah Traynor, prosecuting, told Peterlee magistrates court: “She admitted the offence and gave a full explanation of the background to the officers.

She said she had an affair and she believed the baby was the result of that affair.”

Varley said she was living with her husband and two children, a daughter aged 16 and son aged six.
