A mayoral candidate has been stabbed in the neck with a hunting knife in an attack reportedly motivated by her policy on refugees.Henriette Reker, 58, was seriously injured after being slashed in the neck but is expected to survive after emergency surgery, according to reports. She was campaigning for the upcoming mayoral election in Cologne, Germany this morning when she apparently went to offer a stranger one of her rosettes.
The 44-year-old man then stabbed her, news agency BILD reports.
Eyewitness Councillor Dr Jürgen beam said: “The perpetrator had two knives. He went up to her and stabbed her. Then he attacked other people who wanted to come to her aid. The attacker said he would save society from such people.”
Other witnesses said the man made no attempt to flee the scene and stayed until police arrived and he was arrested. Four others were injured.
According to one witness the man said he carried out the stabbing because of Ms Reker’s refugee policy. Police said initial investigations suggested it was a “politically motivated” attack.
