PICTURED: Fireball As Airshow Jet Crashes Onto Road

A World War Two Hawker Hunter plane has crashed during an airshow in Shoreham-By Sea, West Sussex.smokeAirshow officials confirmed there had been “a major incident outside the airfield boundary”, tweeting that emergency services are responding.

The crash happened on or near the A27 and there have been reports that the pilot of the plane may have escaped before it hit the ground.

Laura Raymond from Splash FM was watching and commentating the display and said: “Within seconds we were thinking ‘gosh that plane was going rather low’.

“There was a ball of fire, we didn’t even hear an impact – and then plumes of black smoke. It’s being described by the commentator as a tragic incident.”  She said the planes “don’t fly over crowds but obviously everyone’s in shock”.

“It went up in a ball of flames. All we can do is pray the pilot has been brought out of the plane. From my limited knowledge there won’t have been time to eject.”smoke1A spokesman for Sussex Police said they were “aware” of the crash and were “dealing” with it.
