A teenage girl, who was stabbed during a gay pride parade in Jerusalem on Thursday, tragically died of her injuries earlier today.16-year-old Shira Banki sustained a stab wound to the back during last week’s parade and has been in a critical condition in hospital since the shocking incident took place.
Commenting on the teenage girl’s tragic death, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “Shira was murdered for courageously supporting the principle that each and every person has the right to live their life in security and respect.”
Echoing the Pride Minister’s thoughts, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat said: “The murder of this young girl at the Gay Pride Parade on the streets of Jerusalem is a criminal offence. We will continue to allow full freedom of expression in this city, we will continue to support all groups and communities.”
The incident, which also saw the hospitalisation of five other individuals, was carried out by Yishai Schlissel. Sclissel, who identifies himself as an ultra-Orthodox Jew, had recently been released from prison after serving a ten-year sentence for stabbing participants of the 2005 Gay Pride March.
According to police, a committee has been formed in order to ascertain the background and circumstances which led to the latest attack.
